GT Paintball Series - Event 1 of 3 - June 4th, 2005

Reported by:
Andrew Saunders

Aside from the initial delay and the 2500psi fills all day the event ran smoothly. And with Atlantic Canada's new premiere all-ref squad Strict Union the reffing was top notch. That was the best reffed event I have been to yet, it's about goddamn time we have refs that will pull 1for1s and not lurk around the sides of the field expecting players to ref themselves. It was also about time players were told that calling paintchecks will be ignored, no more calling 'check his hopper' when you reach for a pod to refill (mix it up you bastards, it's always the hopper).

This season of the GT introduced the 'player cards' and after the initial comparison with everyone on whom had the ugliest, most distorted, blurriest picture (tossup between Trevor and Poodle) I threw mine in the bag and nobody asked for it the rest of the day. Although the players cards are a bit of a money grab this season and they don't really prevent sandbagging it will next season when all the sandbaggers are forced to move up after beating on all the legitimate rookie teams this season.

The 5man division has most of the old teams from last season, some new teams and couple that finally made the move up from 3man. The 3man teams consisted mostly of teams from last season.

Rookie Division - Prelims
Team  FB  DIS  FS  TY  TAC  WR  A8  BCP  FT   Total / 700

  Farm Team (FT)  -  30  0  95  75  100  20  10     330

Novice Division - Prelims
Team  TN  ECO  OBL  SM  FG  ECK  OBK  A8   Total / 700
  Tylenol Novice (TN)     10  97  94  88  84  10  10   393 (4th)
  Shock-ECO (ECO)  94     100  100  88  10  30  97  519 (1st)
  Overkill Sportz Blue (OBL)  5  0     0  10  100  100  30  245
  Shock-Metal (SM)  10  0  100     100  100  97  10  417 (2nd)
  Fuel Gold (FG)  20  20  94  0     20  88  0  242
  ECO Kidz (ECK)  16  91  0  0  88     94  97  386
  Overkill Sportz Black (OBK)  94  74  0  5  20  10     68  271
  Aces & Eights (A8)  94  5  74  94  100  5  40     412 (3rd)

And now for how teams played. ECO played tight and managed to even turn around a 5 on 3. Heavy Metal tried their new break one game which didn't turn out so well. Aces and Eights played solid but couldn't seem to turn it around in the finals. And no amount of whining could save Tylenol Novice this event. The rookie teams all played conservatively.

Rookie Division - Finals
Team  BCP  FS  DIS  TAC   Total / 300
  BC Pred (BCP)     10  50  10  70 (4th)
  Fuel Silver (FS)  95     100  50  245 (1st)
  Disturbed (DIS)  30  0     90  120 (3rd)
  TAC Ops (TAC)  95  30  20     145 (2nd)

Novice Division - Finals
Team  ECO  SM  A8  TN   Total / 300
  Shock-ECO (ECO)     94  100  91  285 (1st)
  Shock Metal (SM)  10     91  94  195 (2nd)
  Aces & Eights (A8)  0  15     97  112 (3rd)
  Tylenol Novice (TN)  10  10  5     25 (4th)

This was a well executed event, the weather couldn't have possibly been hotter and despite the initial delay everything completed at a decent hour. And the best part of GT events is that the 3rd place novice team managed to break even with their winnings.

  INFRASTRUCTURE  4 / 5
  SCHEDULING  3 / 5
  CATERING  4 / 5
  FIELDS  3.5 / 5
  MARSHALING  4.5 / 5
  ATMOSPHERE  4 / 5

I would have given reffing the first 5/5 for the only reason that they were short staffed for 5man. And where was the giant X? I saw several players weeping.

On a side note, ECO was talking their patented pre-game smack and I made a wager with BC for the sum of one case of beer if they dropped even one game the whole day. And, aside from losing in the prelims to ECO Kidz, they lost their second game of the day to Overkill Sports Black. And I received nothing, for shame...
