GT Paintball Series - Event 1 of 3 - May 31st to June 1st, 2003

Reported by:
Andrew Saunders

On the way to the event we happened upon Shawn Graham filming a commercial for the liberal party, we couldn't pass up an opportunity to get our picture taken with him especially since I was wearing a Draxxus shirt. Surprisingly he wasn't appalled by the fact we were heading to a paintball tournament. If he jumps on the anti-paintball bandwagon down the road this picture might come in handy.

The weather called for rain the entire weekend, but it would stop just before and start right after. Nothing about this weekend seemed to go wrong. Nice round paint and lots of air. The field layout was thin and long with smaller bunkers in the middle, this field was geared for spraying paint. Most teams, especially in the amateurs, would still run all over it. The first day they managed to get through all the prelims and quickly at that. At the end they announced that the next day would be starting at 10am so teams could stay out and drink (as if they wouldn't anyways).

The next day started off with the semis, two things worth noting here. Renegades of Havoc had to play with only two people because one person apparently couldn't make it and with the no substitution rule in effect they had no option. And throughout the prelims and the semis Gone Ballistic only lost one game. Quite an impressive feat but coupled with losing a flag pull and how tight the novice semis were, they were just barely nudged out.

After the semis was the one-on-one for the Nasty Impulse. 30 players, 30 bucks each, single elimination. The eventual winner was Woody of Strict Union 1. One amusing game was in the final four. The bottom line off the eMatrix Mark Cleghorn was using blew off, with about 20-30 seconds of air he shoved it back and tried to hold it in place. Running up quickly to the fifty and then trying to shoot proved to be too awkward, taking one in the hopper. A for effort.

Amateur Division - Finals
  Team  1  2  Total / 300
  Strict Union 1  100  130  230 (1st)
  Renegade  95  125  220 (2nd)
  Spikes 5150  10  110  110 (3rd)
  Sub Zero 2  0  0  10 (4th)

Novice Division - Finals
  Team  1  2  Total / 300
  CO2 Cool  100  195  205 (1st)
  Disturbed 1  95  105  200 (2nd)
  Thunder Paint  10  20  115 (3rd)
  Mystic Warriors  0  95  105 (4th)

The reffing was pretty good, some of the refs seemed hands off but Bruce did an excellent job as head ref. Hopefully the next 2 Atlantic GT events will be of the same caliber. To quote CO2 Cool, "This was the best weekend ever..."
